Summary: Support an array of internal and external projects relating to business development and marketing functions across the firm.

Executive Summary: This position represents a growth opportunity for a person currently engaged in grant writing and proposal development who is seeking to learn and participate in the internal full cycle of the business development process.

Day to day the business development associate is engaged in the production of proposals for submission to primarily public and philanthropic sources, which includes supporting and coordinating with team leaders. The business development associate will also build upon and manage the current business development systems for tracking opportunities, enrolling the firm in solicitation systems, monitoring the incoming opportunities, and strategically expanding the number of on-call benches for which the firm is approved. The business development associate will help drive conversations about systems upgrades and investments including discussions of optimal CRM systems.

Lastly, the business development associate will track submission outcomes, analyzing results to identify areas of success and performance improvement, and will schedule debrief meetings for team leaders with proposals issuers when the firm’s submissions are unsuccessful.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

Business Development

  • Building and maintaining a business development opportunities database and establishing policies and procedures for identifying opportunities through existing and new sources.
  • Monitoring business development opportunities and collaborating with client-facing teams to produce proposals or other business development materials as required.
  • Preparing proposal responses (RFP/Qs, etc.).
    • Proposal template preparation (cover letter, general firm information, required forms).
    • Coordinating scope and budget content with team leads.
    • Formatting according to RFP/Q or other bid requirements.
    •  Copy editing.
    • Printing, binding, and shipping proposal responses and/or preparing digital submissions.
    • Assisting team leads with interview presentation materials.
  • Collecting business development outcomes data and analyzing results to identify areas of success and performance improvement. Scheduling debrief calls for team leaders with procurement officials when submissions are unsuccessful.
  • Marketing
    • Collateral materials
      • Continually updating existing content and developing new content as directed.
      • Working with the graphic design team to update existing or create new templates, e.g., proposals, presentations, etc.
  • Assist with strategic research, planning, and scheduling for business development initiatives and meetings.

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in urban studies, planning, public policy, social work, business, real estate, or communication degree and two to five years of grant writing experience.


  • Participation in firm’s medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life insurance plans with firm contributions of up to $500 per month
  • Participation in the firm’s 401(k) plan, with firm contributions of 3% of your compensation per plan year (subject to vesting requirements)
  • Reimbursement of up to $40 per month for cell phone costs and up to $72 per month for commuting to work via public transit
