San Diego Democratic Rep. Scott Peters at the Build More
Housing Near Transit Act press conference on Oct. 8, 2019
San Diego Democratic Rep. Scott Peters introduced a bill in September that would require transit development projects to create “housing feasibility studies” in order to be eligible for the Federal Transit Administration Capital Investment Grants Program. The proposed Build More Housing Near Transit Act would encourage communities to “adopt land-use plans that accommodate more housing.” By providing financial incentives to create housing near transit, the bill aims to both increase the housing supply at all income levels as well as facilitate the use of transit and reduce air pollution. The bill includes bipartisan co-sponsors and is endorsed by several professional groups including Habitat for Humanity and the American Planning Association.
