Summary of Position: This is a full-time position dedicated to outreach and engagement activities related to disaster recovery efforts across the state of California. The position requires verbal and written Spanish/English fluency. The Community Outreach Associate will assist the Innovations Team with developing outreach and other marketing materials (including radio and print advertisements, social media stories, press releases, community presentations, etc.) as well as conduct extensive outreach with local officials and community organizations to identify homeowners with unmet disaster recovery needs related to recent California wildfires, high winds, and mudslides/debris flows.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the position is remote until such time as California public health officials determine it safe to resume outreach activities safely in person. At that time, extensive statewide travel may be required to conduct outreach meetings in affected communities.

LeSar Development Consultants is headquartered in San Diego and has staff located in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Ohio. We have office space available in Los Angeles and San Diego but are open to candidates from other areas of California who are willing to work from home but travel to our headquarters or other offices as needed post-pandemic.

Critical to succeeding in this role is having demonstrated basic to intermediate level experience, skills, and success/aptitude in:

  1. Basic/intermediate-level knowledge of federal or state community development block grant programs
  2. Prior internship and/or work experience in direct stakeholder outreach roles and/or case management
  3. Intermediate-level skills in research, writing, project management; community group facilitation; and creating and delivering engaging presentations to public- and private-sector leaders
  4. Commitment to further deepening the ways in which we center equity within our firm and in our work with our clients and partners
  5. One to three years of prior work experience in homelessness planning, housing policy and development, disaster recovery, or in closely related fields a plus

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Client work

    1.  Assist in developing policies, programs, practices, and tools to support client goals and facilitate stakeholder engagement
    2.  Develop marketing materials related to disaster recovery, including advertisements, presentations, brochures, social media posts, press releases, and summary reports
    3.  Support and facilitate meetings and workshops related to disaster recovery efforts
    4. Work in collaboration with subject matter experts to develop trainings and toolkits as needed forclients and stakeholders
    5. Research and write reports incorporating findings and recommendations to clients
    6. Present findings and recommendations to clients and their stakeholders and engage them tounderstand their response and assess resulting opportunities and challenges
    7. Maintain ongoing communications with internal team members, clients, and external stakeholders asappropriate to fulfill contractual obligations within budget and schedule constraints
    8. Prepare monthly project reports for designated client-related activities as part of invoicing process
    9. Represent the firm in a professional manner externally and internally

 

Team Participation

    1. Develop and maintain strong project- and task-management procedures to ensure high-quality andtimely execution of all internal and external duties
    2. Perform administrative duties as required to fulfill project and firm operations
    3. Attend regular all-staff and team meetings as required
    4. Perform other duties as assigned entailing being in service to the firm

Required Qualifications

Subject Matter and Technical Competencies

      • Basic/intermediate level knowledge of:
        1. Best practices in stakeholder engagement, marketing and message design, andpresenting complex information to a variety of audiences
        2. Strong writing and public presentation skills
      • Spanish and English fluency, both verbal and written
        1. Principles and practices of business communication and correct use of English andSpanish, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation
        2. Language translation experience (Spanish-English and English-Spanish), both verbal andwritten
      • General technology applications and specific applications including Microsoft Outlook, Teamsand/or Zoom, Word, Excel, and Power Point applications

External Market Facing Competencies

      • Write clear, concise, comprehensive, and effective reports as well as client and stakeholdercommunications (e.g., memos, press releases, program summary materials)
      • Basic/intermediate level ability to communicate program-related policies to diverse public andprivate organizations and individuals
      • Practice advocacy, public, and government relationship skills with respect to a wide variety ofissues, especially those related to housing, homelessness, equity/inclusion, community andeconomic development, and/or disaster recovery

Internal Facing Competencies

      • Ability to remain calm and effective while working under pressure to meet multiple deadlinesand short time constraints
      • Ability to establish priorities, manage time, and meet multiple deadlines
      • Ability to organize work, set priorities, and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility

      • Work cooperatively with staff from other teams and organizations

Education/Experience: Master’s degree with major coursework in planning, public policy, social work, business, real estate or related concentration from an accredited college or university preferred.

Travel Expectation: In a post-COVID-19 environment, person in this position will be expected to travel to San Diego at least twice annually, and to be available for travel (day trips and overnight for stays of 1 to 3 nights) within California for up to 50% of the work time.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, use a laptop computer, communicate via telephone, reach with hands and arms, and in a post-COVID-19 environment to travel on public transportation, by car, ride share, train, and airplane. Compensation and Benefits

  • Research Analyst: $20-25/hour; Associate: $55,000-$75,000/salary
  • Participation in firm’s medical, dental, vision, long-term disability, and life insurance plans with firmcontributions of up to $500 per month
  • Participation in the firm’s 401(k) plan, with firm contributions of 3% of your compensation per plan year(subject to vesting requirements)
  • Reimbursement of up to $40 per month for cell phone costs and up to $72 per month for commuting to work via public transit
  • 10 paid holidays per year
  • Paid time off equivalent to 15 days per year
