Our Neighborhood Voices Campaign Drops 2022 Measure

The group behind the Our Neighborhood Voices campaign, which was working to secure the needed signatures to place a measure on the November ballot to nullify laws that promote new development as well as other planning and environmental laws, announced on February 18th that it was unable to gather the needed signatures. The campaign is now targeting the 2024 election.

Note that, while the measure’s sponsors focus on two recently passed bills that make changes to areas zoned single-family — SB 9 and SB 10 — the measure as written would be far-reaching, giving all local governments throughout the state the ability to override any state law that conflicts with local laws that regulate land use and development. This includes the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the California Clean Air Act, state laws governing oil and gas exploration, and many more environmental and climate change protections that have been hard fought over the past 30+ years. In addition, it would negate recent laws to ensure fair housing protections and the ability of homeowners to add ADUs to their property.
